I’m J. Carter

I’m J. Carter, the person behind Everyday Ready. On amateur radio you’ll hear me identified as KI5MFF; my GMRS callsign is WRJW626.

My Christian faith shapes why I prepare: to care for my household, use what I’ve been given wisely, and be useful to the people around me.

Everyday Ready is a place to share practical ideas that ordinary households can put to use. A few familiar meals, safe water, a way to communicate, and someone who will check on you can be a useful beginning.

A background in service

I’m a retired deputy sheriff’s sergeant and a former U.S. Army Ranger. My years in the Army and law enforcement have shaped my appreciation for clear communication, practical skills, and people who follow through.

That perspective carries into the subjects we cover here: understanding your equipment, recognizing your limits, practicing a plan, and knowing when to ask for help. There is always more to learn.

Radio, teaching, and community

I hold an Amateur Extra license and serve as the Valencia County Amateur Radio Emergency Services Emergency Coordinator in New Mexico. I’m also involved with the Valencia County Amateur Radio Association and helping students learn about amateur radio.

I enjoy the technical side, but the people give it purpose. Helping a new operator gain confidence, passing a clear message, or finding a practical solution together can make a skill useful beyond the hobby.

Everyday Ready draws on that interest while keeping its advice open to people wherever they live. You do not need a radio license to start preparing or to help a neighbor.

Away from the radio desk

My wife and I enjoy camping with our dogs, Huey and Poppy. I also enjoy taking a small radio, a battery, and a wire antenna outdoors to see whom I can reach.

Camping gives us a chance to use many of the same everyday skills discussed here: managing water and power, making meals, staying comfortable, and keeping equipment organized. Useful gear earns its place by getting used.

Why I’m writing this

I want preparedness to feel approachable. Begin with what your household needs, make sensible choices within your means, and learn a little at a time. Share what you know and welcome what someone else can teach you.

For me, loving a neighbor includes noticing, listening, and being willing to offer practical help. That help should be freely offered to people of every belief and background.

Everyday Ready is my independent personal project. My background and community roles explain my perspective; they do not imply endorsement by an employer, school, club, public agency, or emergency communications organization.

Love your neighbor. Be ready to help.

A little ready goes a long way.
